You Surface Seldom

Exploring memory and mapping, You Seldom Surface interrogates swims made in shallow, south coast channel waters. The work uses the sea as a symbol for change – and the swims as an act of unconscious ritual. A sense of unknown, prickling disquiet (embodied in Cast) pervades each murky immersion. Surface tension (I, II and II) examine moments of sea surface – and self – breaking. Pinpointing location, jams.stops.alien, gives an etched view of the coastline. Beachy Head reveals the other, unseen, side of the farthest view on the horizon, whilst Refrain, a digital film, allows the viewer access to the artist’s intimate experience.
