MA Fine Art Show as a Print Fellow

MA Fine Art Show as a Print Fellow
(July 2017)

This year’s MA Fine Art Show 2017 at City and Guilds of London Art School features work by 25 artists including graduating students, two Artists in Residence, The Worshipful Company of Painter-Stainers Fellow in Decorative Surfaces as well as the Print and Wood Fellows. The Art School’s traditional Victorian artists’ studios and Georgian rooms play host to a wide range of ambitious and fascinating works. Each artist finds their own way to tackle the nuanced dialogues between the personal and the public, the material and the idea, the hand-made and the digital. The taxing question of what painting, sculpture, print and drawing can be now, in our post truth, media saturated times lurks around every corner. Large-scale gestural paintings, referencing the fabulations of the Rococo, sit alongside minimalist paintings-as-object, while the quiet, intimate and domestic is juxtaposed with imagined splendorous and sprawling wildernesses in works of hyper detail. Immersive works made of autobiographical material and objects, providing ‘too much information’, give way to regimented ranks of preposterous and crazed gilded military busts. A dedication to research and enquiry is evident throughout. Conversations with art history and the contemporary have been deep and meaningful as well as irreverent and heartfelt.
